Presenter Bio:

Fiona Hill is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor and Registered Play Therapist in private practice in St. Louis, Missouri. She has been working in the area of mental health in various capacities since 1995 and has been providing therapy services to children, teens and families since 2015. Her specialties include attachment disruption, trauma, and utilizing digital tools in play therapy.

More Info:

Appropriately utilizing digital tools in play therapy can, and does, have a clear connection to the Therapeutic Powers of Play (Stone, 2020). “The Therapeutic Powers of Play refer to the specific change agents in which play initiates, facilitates, or strengthens their therapeutic effect.” (Schaefer and Drewes, 2014). With this foundation in mind, it is important to explore the therapeutic potential that the use of digital tools provides within the play therapy setting. Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) is a widely researched and practiced therapeutic modality to treat symptoms related to trauma, anxiety, and depression (Maxfield, 2019). Additionally, the use of technology in treatment of these same symptoms and its implications on recovery is long standing through the work of many (Bean, 2020; Stone, 2019; Stone, 2020). Digital platforms are theoretically universal; therefore, integrating them into therapeutic practice is not limited to one approach or modality. In fact, the inclusion of digital tools in play therapy has the potential to expand the holding space for self-expression, strengthening of internal resources, and activating the powers of play to promote healing in ways that incorporate the digital culture of modern-day play therapy clients across the lifespan. This universality makes the therapeutic integration of digital platforms and EMDR an exciting one!
