Title: Foundational Relevance: Deeping Your Knowledge in Play Therapy History and Seminal Theories

Description:

Play in therapy dates to the early 1900s in psychological and counseling theory. This training will explore the early beginnings and references of what is now modern-day play therapy. The emergence of seminal play therapy theories (child centered play therapy, Adlerian play therapy, filial therapy, etc.) will be covered. Theories will be highlighted with accompanying video clip examples and/or techniques. Participants will have the opportunity to explore their own philosophical and play therapy preferences and contemplate which play therapy theories best align with the work they enjoy doing. Additionally, this training will highlight historically significant developments in play therapy and look at the current global impact

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the early implementations of play in therapy.

  • Describe a timeline of play therapy development to present day.

  • Identify significant play therapy developments such as the formation of the Association for Play Therapy.

  • List the main tenets of Child Centered Play Therapy, Filial Therapy and Adlerian Play Therapy.

  • Identify a play therapist "best fit" for aligning with theories and approaches.

  • Describe the variances and the common feature among play therapy theories.

This workshop meets APT’s definition of a CONTACT training and is approved by APT Approved Provider 08-223 for 6 CE hours. APT continuing education credit may only be awarded to mental health professionals.

Refund Policy: Refunds will be given for paid continuing education training cancelled by MAPT and for when MAPT relocated trainings to another region of the state. For attendees who cancel 48 hours prior to the start of the training, a MAPT credit will be provided to attendees for the amount paid and can be used at a future MAPT training.
