Posttraumatic play can be daunting for many therapists. Understanding the power of posttraumatic play and knowing how to facilitate it in a play therapy session is key for treatment. This workshop focuses on evaluating posttraumatic play, recognizing toxic posttraumatic play, and intervening when the play becomes toxic for a child client.   

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will explain the different trauma types and the role of the therapist in posttraumatic play.

  • Participants will describe three benefits of posttraumatic play within the context of play therapy.

  • Participants will describe three ways of identifying posttraumatic play within the context of play therapy

  • Participants will describe three ways of evaluating posttraumatic play in a play therapy session.

  • Participants will list three warning signs of when posttraumatic play becomes toxic within a play therapy session.

  • Participants will demonstrate intervention skills that help transition child clients out of toxic posttraumatic play within a play therapy session.

About the Presenter:

Danielle is a licensed professional counselor and registered play therapist supervisor. Danielle has been practicing play therapy skills and interventions with children and their families since 2011. Her niche is early childhood play therapy ages 18 months to 5 years, trauma based play therapy, and attachment based play therapy. She is also has a background in graduate level education and program coordination.

Danielle currently owns a private practice in Weldon Spring, MO. She is also the co-owner of the Playhouse which provides professional development trainings for mental health professionals, agencies, organizations, and provide a certificate Program for play therapy to help clinicians complete the requirements to attain the registered play therapist certification through APT. This workshop meets APT’s definition of a CONTACT training and is approved by APT Approved Provider 08-223 for 6 CE hours. APT continuing education credit may only be awarded to mental health professionals.

Refund Policy: Refunds will be given for paid continuing education training cancelled by MAPT and for when MAPT relocated trainings to another region of the state. For attendees who cancel 48 hours prior to the start of the training, a MAPT credit will be provided to attendees for the amount paid and can be used at a future MAPT training.
