Relational Cultural Theory (RCT) is a counseling framework that emphasizes growth-fostering relationships grounded in connection, authenticity, and mutual empathy, while intentionally attending to culture, power, and resilience. Play therapist supervisors can draw on RCT to cultivate supportive supervision relationships that promote supervisee development and professional growth. This session will explore the core tenets of RCT and examine how they inform play therapy supervision.  

Objectives:

  1. Identify the tenets of relational cultural theory.

  2. Explain how relational cultural theory principles can be applied within play therapy supervision.

  3. Apply a relational cultural theory informed play therapy supervision approach to a supervisee case example.

About the Presenter:

Dr. Emily Brown is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor, and a National Certified Counselor. She is an Associate Professor at University of Missouri - St. Louis and Director of the Play Therapy Institute @ UMSL, which is an Approved Center for Play Therapy Education by the Association for Play Therapy as well as an Approved Provider of Continuing Education. Her scholarship focuses on counselor training and response for children and adolescents with loss, crisis, and trauma. She received her Master’s degree in School Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and her PhD in Counselor Education from the University Tennessee, Knoxville. Emily enjoys travel, reading, hiking, and spending time with friends and family.

This workshop is approved by APT Approved Provider 08-223 for 2 NON-CONTACT CE hours. APT continuing education credit may only be awarded to mental health professionals.

Refund Policy: Refunds will be given for paid continuing education training cancelled by MAPT and for when MAPT relocated trainings to another region of the state. For attendees who cancel 48 hours prior to the start of the training, a MAPT credit will be provided to attendees for the amount paid and can be used at a future MAPT training.

Registration ends 24 hours before all workshops/trainings.
